About us

Medienstadt Leipzig e. V. was founded during the period of political change in 1989/90 as a non-profit civic association. The aim of Medienstadt Leipzig e. V. was and is to promote and support Leipzig’s transition from an industrial to an information society. In addition to scientific studies and cultural projects, Medienstadt Leipzig e. V. has helped shape public life in Leipzig since the early 1990s, particularly through the organization of events. Medienstadt Leipzig e. V. initiated the Saxon Information Initiative (SII) in 1994 and was involved in the implementation of several European SII projects until 1998.

Since the early 2000s, the association has also been active in the international arena and is registered with ICANN as an “at-large structure.” Association members were part of the UN working group that proposed the establishment of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and are still actively involved in IGF Germany and the equivalent regional forum EuroDIG. They have also contributed and continue to contribute their expertise to various expert groups (e.g., the high-level Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace).
